It’s that time of year where most of us often take a deep look at how we did the previous year and what we would like to work on for the new year. We drink a green smoothie with essential oils (of some recipe or another) every single morning. With the new year, we are reevaluating ingredients we use in them. Trying to cut back on our glycemic load to help balance out our blood sugars more evenly. Sadly, that means we will be cutting out bananas and pineapple from green smoothies.
No worries though. Did you know that an avocado is also great for making a cream consistency in smoothies? Avocados also add many vital nutrients and healthy fats.
Essential Oil Green Smoothie Ingredients
- 1 Cup Coconut Milk
- 1 Avocado
- 1/2 Cup Green Grapes
- 1 Granny Smith Apple
- 1-2 Cups Raw Spinach or Kale (kale has more nutrients than spinach but is much stronger)
- 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
- 1 Raw Brazil Nut (omit if you have a nut allergy)
- 1 drop lime essential oil (make sure you are using a high-quality essential oil and that it can be taken internally)
- 1 Squirt Liquid Stevia (optional)
- Ice as needed
- Brocolli Sprouts (optional, read about them at the end)
- Stainless Steel Straws (helps make the smoothie even colder when drinking!)
How to Make The Green Smoothie With Essential Oils
To make this smoothie, a high powered blender would be beneficial. I like to start out adding my liquid to the bottom of the blender. Usually, there are measurements on the blender, so save yourself from having to wash extra dishes! Next, add your chia seeds and brazil nut. Next comes the avocado, and green grapes. Make sure you give all the fruits and veggies a good
wash before adding to your smoothie. Next comes the apple. Just remove the stem of the apple, wash it and cut it into chunks. We add the core and all into the smoothie (feel free to omit the core if you want). Depending on your blender, you might need to cut the apple up into small pieces. Add 1 drop of lime essential oil and a few ice cubes.
Many people don’t add ice cubes, so you can omit that too if you want. However, even if some of your ingredients are frozen or have been in the fridge, I don’t think the smoothie is cold enough without some ice cubes in it. We like to drink ours with our stainless steel straws as it helps make the smoothie even colder when you drink it!
Why the Chia Seeds and Brazi Nut?
Chia seeds are touted as being a wonderful source of iron, calcium, fiber, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. They go into every smoothie made in our home.
I remember long ago watching a Dr. Oz show and they were talking about Brazil nuts. He stated how important selenium is in our body. Every single cell uses selenium and most Americans were not getting the daily requirement of selenium. Brazil nuts are one of the best, if not the best source of selenium we can consume. So, one raw brazil nut per serving goes into every smoothie we make (omit if you have a nut allergy please). If you aren’t using a high powered blender, the nuts can be kind of gritty. We use a BlendTec and can’t even tell the nuts have been added. How great is that?
To Add Broccoli Sprouts Or Not
If you are working on your health, like I am, then pay attention here. Broccoli sprouts are 20-100 times more potent than regular broccoli. How crazy is that? Homemade sprouts are even better for you. I started adding these to my smoothie and let me tell you, that is a green flavor that is hard to get down. So, instead, I made my smoothie as usual. Then, I pour out almost all of it into my cup. I leave enough smoothie in the bottom that the blender will blend it (or you can add a little water). Then, I like to clean about 2-4 T of sprouts and add them to this tiny amount of smoothie. I remix (sometimes twice as I don’t’ want ANY chunks of sprouts left) the smoothie with the sprouts in it. Once it’s done, you should only have maybe 1/2 cup of mixture to drink. I grab a straw and chug down the sprouts.
Of course, sprouts are great on salads, but I am trying to get 1/2 Cup to 1 Cup of sprouts into my diet a day, and I’ve found this to be a great way to get them in. Let me be clear, this last portion is optional. It really doesn’t taste great, it tastes very green. I chug down the sprout portion first and then I drink the rest of my smoothie.
Making your own homemade sprouts is the best way to get them in. They are the freshest homegrown and you know how they have been grown. That is an article for another time, however.
New Year, New You
